REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RECOGNITION . . . Three Palo Alto-based companies and organizations are among the 37 East Bay and Silicon Valley businesses that have won awards for their waste-reduction efforts. Statewide, the California Integrated Waste Management Board is recognizing the efforts of 278 businesses for the extraordinary ways they have reduced, reused, recycled and purchased recycled products as part of their daily operations. The Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) winners from Palo Alto are Magic, an all-volunteer nonprofit group which researches and teaches ecology, and a winner for the third year in a row; the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation, an education and advocacy center that promotes environmentally sustainable solutions; and Hewlett-Packard California Analytical Division, which conducts research, development and manufacturing of analytical chemical systems and software development for lab network server systems. HP CAD, located on South California Avenue, donates excess and by-product materials to a teachers' program in San Jose and donates aluminum cans to Costano Middle School in East Palo Alto to help support its science program. The division has increased the percentage of solid waste recycled from 49 percent in 1995 to 69 percent last year. HP's Cupertino and Roseville sites were also recognized with an award. Magic won for its commitment to demonstrating how people can apply methods and principles of ecology to become more aware, to cooperate, and to protect and restore the environment. Magic's annual cash expenditures are reduced by more than 60 percent through waste minimization--saving more than $30,000 in 1996, an amount equal to their total cash expenses, according to volunteer Hilary Hug. The PCCF was recognized for installing energy-saving lighting, replacing the carpet with one made from recycled soft-drink bottles and instituting building-wide recycling that halved the amount of garbage hauled away. The lighting retrofit paid for itself in 16 months and garnered an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.
