Palo Alto zookeepers recall teaching moments

Original post made on Apr 26, 2013

On a recent afternoon, between feeding the animals their dinners and putting them to bed, part-time zookeeper L. Lee Harper excitedly recalled one of her favorite moments in the three years she's been at the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo.

My 2nd grader and I were just there 2 days ago. Thanks for giving us better insights about the rock star animals. Kudos to the staff!

Growing up here 50yrs ago some of my favorite times were spent at the Jr Museum. It is where I first learned about the environment, our place in it, and our responsibilities to it. And it was so much fun! A few years ago I finally had the throw away a wonderful model of an Oriole I won at the Jr Museum when its wings fell off; that's how good the memories were! I'm so glad to see that it continues it's fine work and has wonderful plans for the future. This is how the world changes for the better. Bravo!

"Ninety-nine percent of the people who come through here you love, but you remember those 1 percent who don't treat the animals with respect above all else," he said. "You have to be professional about it, as much as you want to run over there and scream at them," he said. "Sometimes you need to talk to the parent just as much as the child."

I actually think screaming would not be out of order! Kudos to the wonderful, patient, staff.

I just saw on the local news that a bald eagle flew off on Mon. Feb. 22. While hiking in Foothill Park on Tues. (23rd) at approximately 11am with several docents, we spotted a bald eagle with something in one of its talons circling above. We were close to the Orchard Glen picnic area.
