Briones house column

Original post made by What news?, Fairmeadow, on Mar 21, 2007

There was an a thread a few weeks ago regarding the Briones house and some posters felt that the current owners should be shunned etc. Here is a link to a column in today's Mercury News by Patty Fisher regarding the house:

It is clear that the city of Palo Alto and local preservationists share the blame for the deterioration of the house.

What I do not understand is why, even at this late date, those that are so eager to preserve the house do not put up their own money to purchase and save this "historic" home.

You're assuming that everyone who cares about history is wealthy. If I had the money, I would certainly have forked it out.

You can care about history, just do not expect to control someone else's private property because you think it is historic--especially when it appears that the city of Palo Alto was negligent in it's oversight and when the "preservationists" were johnny-come-latelys when it came to wanting to preserve the house.

Agreed. After reading the article, I see that I had an entirely false idea. Those poor guys weren't victims in this process, of course, knowing that they were going to have to jump through a few hoops, but I am sure they never dreamed that there would be such a surge in interest when nobody had cared a whit for years.

Agreed. If the preservationists cared enough, then they could have gathered the money together to buy it, fix it up, and gift it to the City to manage as a historic house. Many private groups have done just that.

If there isn't enough interest to vote with the pocketbook, or to spend all the tax money it would take to preserve it, then it needs move forward. I really hope those people are NOT shunned for doing what is still a fundamental right ( barely) of every American, and that is the right to own property and do with it what you will, within the law. Emininent domain is pushing that envelope, but we can still push back.
