Congratulation on a successful burn to benefit the natural regime at the preserve.

I would guess that the carbon dioxide emitted by these burns more than cancels out the illusory benefit resulting from the many regulations that the city counsel has enacted that are supposed to fight global warming.

the primary purpose of prescribed burns is to avoid uncontrolled wildfires. Trust me, you really do not want that to happen in Palo Alto.

Maybe it's the only way to fight wildfires, but I'm still wondering how much carbon load it entails.

Why not use a herd of goats to eradicate the weeds, as Menlo Park does in the hills? The goat herding crew puts up temporary fences to pen an area, and when an area is cleared by the goats, moves the fences to an adjacent area. There are traditional livestock guardian dogs (Pyrenees, Maremma, etc.) to protect the goats from predators. In Menlo Park (up in Sharon Heights) children and parents come to watch and learn.
