Real Improvements in trash collection

Original post made by Resident, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Oct 4, 2012

Seriously, I would love an enterprising company to come along and offer to take away all our trash, recyclables and compostables on a regular basis charging us for what we put out each week rather than a fixed cost.

I wish we had an opt out feature for this on our bill so that some healthy competition could bring the costs down. This is the trouble with government monopolies, there is no competition and consumers (?) have no say in what service they receive. I think that this would work in other government matters also (wonder where I have heard this before)!!

Yeah, that fixed-cost stuff is just a front for socialism, I want every gram of my trash weighed so I never have to pay for any communist's trash! And why do we have to pay people so much ... why can't we just hire some illegals?

Nothing socialistic in my suggestion. Why can't we have our trash weighed, or at least not be charged if we choose to go away on vacation or don't have enough recyclables this week to put the can out?

The fixed charge we have is no more than a tax with a fancy name for a service which is going downhill while the costs rise.

The garbage company we have now, that replaced PASCO, is the pits. They leave trash on the street that they spill when emptying trash, recycling, and compost containers. Sometimes they leave behind quite a lot of trash in the containers themselves. They start at 6:00 am on my street, but often do not pick up the last of the trash until 2:00pm.
I thought the whole purpose of picking up trash early in the morning was to finish before rush hour so they do not block traffic. Yet I often see them blocking traffic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, especially on Middlefield and Alma, during rush hour.

I think there is a creeping systemic corruption in Palo Alto with regard to its management of the cities. They are funneling money to faceless private corporations that have a political agenda that gets stronger and more able to suck money from the city and able to get more of their private agenda do effectively "tax privately" the people who otherwise would be paying reasonable prices and hiring local Palo Alto residents.

Privatization has been a euphemism for a business mafia that has ripped us off enough, but the solution evades us since we, and the libertarianism duped like Resident are not looking for it to have anything to do with business.

Soon the City will be receiving a proposal to do away entirely with your trash cans. You will only have pick up of your garden trimmings and recyclables, trash cans will be obsoleted.

That means all feminine protection will be recycled along with all tissues containing bodily fluids. Also your old under pants, bras, empty pill bottles not to mention kitchen waste will all go in the recycle bin. I presume it will be sorted by Greenwaste.

O yes, there will of course be an increase in your collection rates although the number of cans collected from each house will go down!!! Trash collection and the Mafia go together.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
