'Finals before break?' is the wrong question...

Original post made by district teacher, Midtown, on Oct 3, 2010

I have been waiting for the calender discussion about finals before or after break to turn to the issue of, 'Why do we even have finals?' Although the following link is about finals at Harvard, I think an argument against finals is sound:

"But the shrinking role of big, blockbuster tests at Harvard and colleges elsewhere is raising serious pedagogical questions about 21st century education: How best do students learn? And what’s the best way to assess that? Is the disappearance of high-stakes, high-pressure final exams a sign that universities are failing to challenge today’s students, or is it just a long overdue acknowledgment that such tests aren’t always the best indicator of actual knowledge?

Something to think about! I would love to see PAUSD have a vision and take a leadership role in this discussion about how we can better serve our students.

I am so glad to see this. There are high schools in our area that excuse seniors from semester finals. The objective here is to reduce their stress from college apps, standardized testing, etc.
I propose that we visit this option for our stressed Palo Alto seniors.
