Opinion: Writer, beware: Chatbots and our kids

Original post made on Mar 10, 2023

Introducing the use of AI bots, and cavalierly erasing a source of high school joy -- the sense of one's own creative, insightful, and maturing voice on the page -- will only deepen the dejected climate in our schools.

“The use of an AI chatbot for help with this developing artistry is not only a fraud upon the reader; it is a fraud upon the writer.”

Touche! I couldn’t agree more!

They use AI to sell headlines, author books, news…. To chat with us online trying to resolve issues…. “Help” us find our way through their business models or software, drive our vehicles, operate on patients…. Wait till AI discovers how dependent & stupid we humans really are.

The only issue/concerns that I have with ChatGPT apps is the loss of personal privacy and potential security breaches pertaining to one's personal information.

Over time, AI will replace the need for various jobs that humans once filled and as it gains further ground, we may wind up being a global society controlled by software.

While this development is far into the future, it is worth noting.

Good luck putting that genie back in the bottle.
What's next?
Ban word processors so students learn cursive?
Ban search engines so students learn the Dewey Decimal System?
Let's leverage technology in education rather than fight it.
