Ummm, I see a little problem with the artist's rendering of the proposed Churchill underpass. Turning left from Churchill into the southbound Alma traffic might create some issues, it would seem.

The reason Palo Alto has not proceeded on grade crossings is that Caltrain indicated they would not approve any plan that would not accommodate four tracks. None of Palo Alto’s plan do so. Any that did would face fierce public opposition as such a plan would require significant property acquisition at the cost of multiple millions of dollars. It would also mean reducing the number of lanes on Alma to two or three lanes, also unthinkable. Four tracks require at least 100 ft of right of way. South of Loma Verde the right of way starts shrinking down to 60 feet near E. Meadow. Please stop blaming Palo Alto for the lack of progress and do more research on the latest Environmental Impact statement for Caltrain and examine the final one before the blended solution was adopted. There you will find the impact on Alma and E. Meadow and Charleston from a 4 track solution. While the latest business plan talks about a 2 track solution in the near term, Caltrain reserves the right to change it to 4 tracks between Mt View and the California train stations.
