Gasoline has cost more in California than most of the rest of the country for as long as I can remember (that'd be decades). If everyone who can go electric does so, and we collectively buy less gas, those who still need gas or who can't afford to go electric might pay what folks elsewhere cough up for a gallon (or even less). Too bad we also have some of the highest electric rates in the nation, so going electric won't provide an escape from the larger cost problem. And we know, we also have the highest housing costs. While California is a lovely place to live and work, it's also very expensive, and that issue is far from exclusive to gas. Our high cost structure has lots of adverse impacts, especially so on those who are not at the top of the state's massive economy. That's the strategic issue I'd really like our governor and legislature to address.

Gasoline in California is not the same as gas in other states. The gasoline sold here is subject to very strict requirements to insure air quality. We also have a special blend for summer, and a special blend for winter. The Gov is very aware of this as his original business sponsors are Getty oil who provided funding to start his restaurant business. His father headed up the foundation for Getty. The Govenor's speeches now are about future political positioning. Adding any taxes to gas at this point will only increase the cost to the consumer.
