California fails to collect basic abortion data — even as it invites an out-of-state influx

Original post made on Jul 1, 2022

As California vows to protect abortion rights, it lacks the data that would help estimate how many out-of-state women may seek services. Currently, the state does not collect abortion data.

I have been reluctant to comment on this, but it seems wrong to me that there is so little information out there about this, either by the state officially, or unofficial figures.

Since this is an elective medical procedure, these figures should be collated as any other medical procedure. Additionally, there should be information not just as to how many or whether it is CA residents or out of state residents, but as to the type of procedure and at what stage of pregnancy, in my opinion.

Is this being used instead of contraception, in cases of rape or incest, in cases of non-viable development, etc. etc.? This should be able to be discussed without any moral debate, but in an effort to understand why the numbers are what they are and how other help can be given to those choosing the procedure.

Education is always important, but are we failing to educate what the procedure is and what it is not?

It's nobody's business! Maybe we should collect data on how many men have Viagra prescriptions.
