PAUSD Board wants to extend Don Austin’s contract to June 2024

Original post made by Puzzled Parent, Palo Alto High School, on Nov 7, 2020

In looking at board documents on the reopening plan, I noticed this item in the consent calendar for the upcoming meeting on November 10:
“G. Second Amendment to the Employment Agreement for the Superintendent. It is recommended the Board approve to extend the term of employment of Dr. Donald B. Austin to end on June 30, 2024.“

I have concerns and questions about this. Why the rush to renew the contract without any discussion? Can we really say that Dr. Austin has been the best leader for Palo Alto these past few years? Can we not do better? From what I hear around the community, many are not happy with his job performance.

We have a new board member joining in December. She ought to have a say in extending the contract or not. At the very least, in the spirit of transparency with all of the stakeholders in this district, the board should at least hear discussion on this item before they commit to such an extensive contract.

Lack of transparency on the extension of Superintendent Don Austin's Contract to 2024. There needs to be many steps in place first, including adding the new School Board member to this discussion. Also making this a very public query instead of quietly adding it to this upcoming School Board Meeting on the 10th. This needs to be a discussion. This needs to have more time involved before a decision is made. Not a small line item placed on the Agenda. And PAUSD, the School Board and the City of Palo Alto wonders why it's residents and families are always demanding "More Transparency"! This is a clear case of Zero transparency. Do not let this meeting on Tuesday the 10th leave us with 4 more years of Don Austin! Most parents and families are not happy with his record of decisions, especially of late. Why this rush and long length of contract? He is not the best that Palo Alto can have for Superintendent.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
