Re-opening schools in October

Original post made by Resident11, Fairmeadow, on Aug 15, 2020

While I support a distance-learning start to school, I hope that PAUSD and the teachers union will strongly consider opening schools in October, the earliest date they have said they will allow this. There is a good essay on this in The Atlantic by a mother, pediatrician, and child psychiatrist who has seen the impact of this pandemic on kids: Web Link "Our city flattened the curve. Our kids belong in school."

"“One death is too many,” one distressed teacher said at a school-committee meeting. I won’t argue with that. But physicians are trained to weigh the risks and benefits not just of treatment but also of non-treatment. To focus only on the downside of reopening is to ignore the significant risks of staying closed: mental illness, hunger, physical inactivity, undetected child abuse, the trauma that results from witnessing violence. Is one death from suicide too many? From head trauma caused by an abusive caregiver? From an accident that befalls an under-supervised preschooler?"
