Original post made on Jul 25, 2020

A rally to support protesters in Portland, Oregon, is being held in Palo Alto on Saturday, with a second protest scheduled for downtown Oakland in the evening.

Trump loves sending his shock troops into cities that have Democratic mayors.

Have any of the real terrorists like the Boogaloos or KKK ever been tear gassed?

@student

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the term "shock troops" is a bit of an exaggeration, as from what I know, the protesters(though they have the right to be mad), have been protesting for weeks on end, wrecking havoc throughout the city, with acts such as destroying property and looting(which I am wholeheartedly against, no one should have to go to sleep worrying about their hard earned property being damaged).

I'm pretty sure the federal agents are legally allowed to use tear gas to suppress a hostile crowd, and Trump is allowed to send those agents as well. I feel like the term "shock troops" should only be used if the protesters were completely peaceful, and the federal agents suddenly tossed tear gas in the crowd for no apparent reason, without warning the protesters first.

Here is a article from 2020 about police using force on a boogaloo crowd. In this case I completely agreed with you. The crowd became hostile, the police arrived and told the crowd to disperse, when they didn't and turned violent, tear gas was used onto the protesters.

I am curious, would you call the cops that the mayor sent "shock troops"?

Just playing devil's advocate here because I have literally never been interested in politics before.

I support the reasons and goal for BLM and other social justice movements. Every
so often some outrage like George Floyd's murder gets everyone looking up mad
and ready to question the status quo, and then eventually when our establishment
distracts up with some different issue in the media or just out-waits everyone's
patience and frustration level it just goes away.

So I can even understand why people are so enraged and ready to do anything to
get the attention of the establishment to bring about changes that are so obviously
needed.

It is a tricky balancing act, because looking at history you see damn few successful
social movements that were totally peaceful, but on the other hand most of us do not
condone violence, or want to see it, and the establishment never reacts proportionally
to it or described it accurately.

But the main thing I worry about is that these video bytes of violence and claims
of violence and looting in many large areas of the country will make Donald Trump
appear to be more of a responsive leader than he deserves to appear, and could
shift the vote helping Donald Trump - bringing about the diametrical opposite
result than the protestors desire.

I wish people would think about what they are doing and find a way to get the
attention and turn the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans towards
fixing these issues and removing the big dumb orange malicious roadblock
currently parked at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW?

There's no tricky balance to be had.

It's because the people who are rioting don't care about the elections. They are actively trying to tear apart the social fabric. It doesn't matter to them who's President. They're simply anti-American. Anti-democratic. Anti-liberalism.

The problem is that the BLM protests have given them cover to do what they want to do, which is wreak havoc. The rioters (and I make the distinction between them and actual protesters who are peaceful) know that the leaders of Washington State and Oregon are too scared of doing anything because that would make them look like they're against the peaceful protesters.

And frankly, the protesters are too dumb to realize they're being used in this manner. I personally hold them accountable for giving these rioters a cover. But of course being typical, they try to shuck responsibility. But they are absolutely responsible.

Please correct me if I am wrong and this was another Raven, but I believe I saw our city council candidate being interviewed on tv news, channel 2, as a spokesperson for the Oakland protest.

If it was she, then I think we should be aware that a city candidate is involving herself in this as a spokesperson.

I do think this is important information for voters to know.

Citizens of Minneapolis (mostly black) are forming armed patrols to try get a handle on the skyrocketing violence and murder in their neighborhoods, now that the police are being defunded and disempowered: Web Link

Coming to your neighborhood, too, if the rioters and radicals have their way. Criminals are going to find out the hard way what the alternative to trained police officers is.
