  1. I hope this underpass is better designed than the other underpasses in the city. The existing underpasses at Embarcadero, Oregon, and California Ave are terrible for pedestrians. They are dark and smelly and sometimes steep and dangerously narrow if wheelchairs, strollers, and bicycles are squeezed in there along with pedestrians. A non-trivial number of robberies of pedestrians in the California Ave underpass have happened in the past.

  2. Michael Price, thank you so much.

Many of us send emails, attend planning meetings, beg, plead, for other ideas to be looked at in a serious fashion. I myself felt that lowering the road and eliminating turns would be worth looking at. But, as I am not an engineer, not anyone who has office, just a well traveled individual who has seen similar things work in other places, thought that it was worth investigating. However, the only options were viaducts, tunnels or closures.

It is about time those of us who go to the trouble of attending meetings, writing emails, were actually given some attention. Why ask for feedback from residents without listening to any idea?

Now this is being discussed but it could well have been discussed several years ago. But, better late than never.

You say: I hope this underpass is better designed than the other underpasses in the city. The existing underpasses at Embarcadero, Oregon, and California Ave are terrible for pedestrians.

Did you even read the article? The pedestrians and cyclists are at a separate grade level that do not go down with the traffic.
Seems like a win-win for the cyclists and pedestrians. They are on a completely separate grade from car and train traffic, which he means it is safer. Studies have consistently shown that separate grades are always safer and prevents accidents.

This is great in terms of pedestrian and cyclists traffic and safety.

Please read the article next time before criticizing. It’s all there in the plans and drawings.

  4. I hope PA Onine will do a similar interview with Ms. Alexis re: the new concept she suggested for Charleston and Meadow crossings which carry a higher volume of traffic.
South Palo alto is part of Palo Alto too. This design was also approved for further study.
