Five things to know now about California's new vaccine law

California has a new vaccination law on the books. It cracks down on inappropriate use of medical exemptions that allow kids to skip some or all vaccines and still enter school.

This law is common sense. Individual doctors are too easy to bribe or corrupt. Vaccines are a public health issue and vaccine fraud endangers the whole school community.

The law is missing a really important provision that would allow families to enroll their children with a signed affidavit or some other promise with teeth that their child is vaccinated and they will provide the paperwork within a specified period of time.

I know a lot of people were really pushed to sign religious exemptions because it just took too much time to get the paperwork from their doctor (or the doctor was out of town), so their kids wouldn't miss school. It's really distressing for kids to start school behind because of adult paperwork problems (and with medical records, stuff happens)..

Like a lot of laws, lawmakers vote without actual experience with how things actually go wrong for lawabiding citizens...
