Salmonella concerns leads Pet Food Express to remove pig ear treats from stores

The Oakland-based pet retail chain Pet Food Express is removing all pig ear dog treats from stores, including two in the Palo Alto area, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration linked them to 127 cases of salmonella.

To save money (even though they reside in a $3.5M Palo Alto home), my neighbors from overseas sometimes buy these at a pet store & prepare them accordingly...

"In Chinese cuisine it can be first boiled or stewed, and then sliced thin, served with soy sauce or spiced with chili paste. When cooked, the outer texture is gelatinous, akin to tofu, and the center cartilage is crunchy. Pig's ear can be eaten warm or cold." source: wikipedia

Are there any significant FDA variances, mandates or requirements that separate food being marketed for pets VS potential human consumption of pet food?
