Attorneys: What's the process for letting someone defend themselves when they are likely delusional or otherwise mentally incompetent?
Based on the little we know about the defendant, I don't see how he could possibly provide himself the best defense.

Billy - what's your status?

The name appears to be Middle Eastern in origin.
As for immigration status...unknown (until verified by the news media/law enforcement).
Self-representation may require a court interpreter to assist depending upon the defendant's English fluency/proficiency.
A strategic move that might serve the defendant later down the road... if found guilty, the ESL factor may serve to create a viable argument for an appeals process citing jury misinterpretation of details/facts.
A clever legal move on the part of the suspect/arrestee as he could walk free.

Billy: "Not one person cares about that. Shallow Alto at its finest. Feeling stupid now .JOSE"
You shouldn't feel stupid, per your punctuation. Perhaps you should feel shame for your racism, but I'll take a guess that you are unable to identify that emotion.
You ignored the question about your immigration status. How long has your family been in Palo Alto?

Besides, his status was referenced in other reports, as I recall. Yemeni, or something. Some of us are less concerned than our xenophobic neighbors, and do not make note of the minor detail.

Pro per/Pro se defendants are at a disadvantage unless they have a complete understanding of Rules of Court.
Motions, discovery & the filings of various petitions are legal skills that cannot be learned overnight.
Then again...if the defendant is found guilty, he will have plenty of time to become a jailhouse lawyer as there are plenty of resources from which to learn from in the prison library.
