Models at Silicon Valley Holiday Parties

Original post made by unbelievable!, College Terrace, on Dec 7, 2017

From today's Bloomberg News:
Models at Silicon Valley Holiday Parties
From the article: "Local modeling agencies, which work with Facebook- and Google-size companies as well as much smaller businesses and the occasional wealthy individual, say a record number of tech companies are quietly paying $50 to $200 an hour for each model hired solely to chat up attendees. For a typical party, scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 8, Cre8 Agency LLC is sending 25 women and 5 men, all good-looking, to hang out with “pretty much all men” who work for a large gaming company in San Francisco"

Adding attractive models to a party of drunken, mostly male tech workers of questionable social skills seems like it has the potential for a lot of problems

According to the Mercury News, some female tech workers are not happy about this practice:

You just need to accept the change we are bringing.

Isn't this how Mark Hurd (former CEO of HP) got into trouble?

Oh! This is what they did in the first season of Silicon Valley on HBO, at Peter Gregory's party with Flo Rida. That first season was the funniest.

Not many views or comments. I guess this seems like a reasonable solution to the otherwise boring holiday parties filled with awkward male tech workers.

As a mother of 20 year old students I am angry hearing about this.
This is beyond stupid considering what has happened in the past, and going on at this moment.
Men's logic is not entirely coming from within their skulls, especially after drinking.
Beware guys- there are a lot of women out there just looking for a sugary rich "Daddy" out there.
HPV is prevalent in this community, and you won't remember what caused your cancer a decade later.

I'm so mad about this I can't write any more.

Is anyone mad enough about this to publish the names of the companies so we can boycott them? We've been to a lot of Silicon Valley corporate parties over the years and shill guests are not the norm.

@Ho-hum, probably lack of response is due to fact that most women in tech have already seen equivalent or worse. It's hardly anything new to us.

Golddiggers or innocents, those hired blind dates expecting to find debonair newly rich bachelors will be disappointed with the mob of bearded Buddy Holly-lookalike geeks they wind up with.

Ah, for the good ole days when people knew how to party on our own and you had a pretty even distribution of female/male workers, conference speakers, managers, etc.

Maybe someone can mansplain to us how this is progress.

It seems like Palantir could really use some attractive models to spice up their holiday photos:

@ Palantir - Haha- I can't believe they might a bunch of nerdy white guys wear colored shirts and form a rainbow. There is some serious emasculation happening.

A friend who used to organize Google events said she was asked to pressure ":the hot Adwords girls" to attend the various holiday parties and she had a budget to pay those reluctant to attend.

Ironically at those parties, Greyglers (old Googlers) were among the few people dancing and partying. We got fewer and fewer over the 10 years we went to them.

@John_Alderman, interesting you should say that. Check the recent news on Palantir founder Peter Thiel's new San Francisco start-up, a private gay social club, and San Francisco's reactions.
