Where would you go?

Original post made by Abitarian, Downtown North, on Jul 24, 2017

If you wanted to move somewhere that offers a comparable lifestyle to the way Palo Alto *used* to be, where would you go and why?

Please do *not* use this topic to complain about Palo Alto, this discussion is intended to highlight other great places to live.

What kind of "used to be" Palo Alto lifestyle are you looking for? Cheaper? Less diverse? More conservative? More rain? More polluted? We've lived in Palo Alto for 40 years and the old timers that I know all have very different memories of what Palo Alto "used to be" like.

According to the NYT Pittsburgh has many of the benefits of Palo Alto (great university–Carnegie Mellon), tech jobs, improving food scene, but with affordable housing:

I would move to LA. Palo Alto is being turned into LA anyway, so why wait when you can move to LA now and enjoy all the benefits of living in a "vibrant" urban environment?

Are we talking about nearby, within the State or anywhere in the US.

Myself, I would like a typical french village with buildings over 100 years old and french bread bought twice a day from the boulangerie a couple of doors away.

OK, I think I would get bored after a couple of days, never mind.

After five years of thought on this subject, I have narrowed it down to Boulder, Colorado; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Brugge or Leuven, Belgium; Eindhoven, The Netherlands; Newton Ferrers, England; or The Trossacks, Scotland.

San Luis Obispo. Boulder is trying very hard to be the next Palo Alto.
