Mike's Cafe, Midtown

Original post made by Neighbor, Midtown, on Sep 4, 2011

We have been to this restaurant frequently over the past several years as we live within walking distance. We have always enjoyed our meals, the friendliness of the staff and had our own particular favorites on the menu.

Recently they changed the menu by reducing the number of choices and our favorites were both removed. There are still some good options and the specials are usually good. They also changed the beefy fries to string fries which are pretty poor in comparison.

They used to have some interesting art on the walls which changed often, but these have been replaced by some framed photographs, not so interesting. They have also changed the dessert case and taken out some of the restaurant dividers. The worst thing is that they have now put in a couple of wall mounted tvs which even if you aren't interested in what is on tv, it still causes you to stare at them and is a big distraction from conversation around the table.

Lastly, several of the choices that those of us at our table selected were not available or only one portion was left. The food was as good as ever, but our overall experience was definitely not as good as usual. It seems we are not alone because I have never seen this restaurant so empty.

I do hope that this restaurant is not having a hard time as we will miss it considerably if it closes. We like the fact that we can walk to a nice restaurant for dinner and have a bottle of wine without having to drive home afterwards. However, if this latest experience becomes the norm, I can't see how it will survive.

We love this restaurant .. but we will welcome the change in the menu (haven't seen the new menu yet) ... we bring our kids to this restaurant and the children's menu isn't the most healty one ! They have pasta in butter sauce, chicken fingers and a few more. The portions are quite alright ..

Add more healthier choices to the menu ! Offer salad instead of fries on the menu ..

I hope this restaurant stays in business with the right modifications in place.

People get tired of the same old thing. If a restaurant has a small menu, they need to change the selections occasionally to keep customers interested. I have not seen the new menu yet, but I wish them well.

Mike's has changed to a sports bar - the MP location has changed, too. I like that you can now get salad in lieu of fries or that horribly boring fruit cup, but haven't been to the PA location since they changed to sports bar - ugh. Not to our taste. The MP location is prettier, so it's possible to ignore the sports bar aspect at certain times. Too bad the PA patio isn't as nice as the MP one, as that's the perfect way to ignore the TV!

If they had to reduce and change the menu, maybe they were not making money. If so, perhaps adding an additional charge for each item might help.

Their breakfast selections were the ones we enjoyed the most. If they have changed those, we may have to find another restaurant.

Here's a thought...have any of you thought about talking to the owner instead of bitching on this forum. There is usually a reason for change and maybe they will tell you.

I don't take myself or my grandkids to restaurants with TVs. I've been going to Mike's for years. I would be devastated to find I have to find another place to go. I guess I stick with the Peninsula Creamery or Joanie's

We (kids & all) used to have dinner @ Mike's frequently. They were 1 of the best kept secrets in Midtown. Then they began a slide downhill. We went back a little while ago, & while the change of menu isn't too much of a disappointment, the quality definitely is worse. Service equally disappointing. And those TVs!!!! If I wanted to eat dinner in a sport's bar, then I'd go to one.

We will not be returning, unless they get rid of the TVs, & get some of their old sparkle back.

My wife and I "were" regular customers then we re-discovered Hobee's and now go there regularly. Hobee's also offers coupons. I agree with others that the TV (and food prices) made the final difference. Mike's at Midtown did have a wonderful he still there? But the food prices kept inching up. One of our complaints was the tables so close together, but I hear that's changed. Particularly at noon and weekend breakfast, the decibel level was over the top. The wait staff was very amiable and good. But everything has changed. It's not Mike's anymore.
