Two juveniles were arrested Tuesday in connection with a number of recent residential burglaries in the Willows neighborhood of Menlo Park, police reported Wednesday night.
Several items of stolen property were recovered, according to Sgt. Jaime Romero of the Menlo Park Police Department’s investigations unit.
Police had deployed additional patrols to the Willows Tuesday and within the first hour of this deployment “an alert citizen reported two suspicious persons in a neighbor’s yard,” Romero said. The two were the juveniles who were arrested.
A string of six residential burglaries were reported in the Willows neighborhood on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, including two on Laurel Avenue, and one each on Euclid Avenue, Haight Street, Durham Street and Oak Court.
Among the items reported stolen were two laptop computers, an iPod, a camera and jewelry. A credit card stolen from one home already had unauthorized charges made against it by the time the victim reported the theft, police said.
The thieves appeared to gain entry through unlocked or open doors and windows in four of the six burglaries, and in each case, the burglary occurred during the day, police said.
Police advise residents that locking doors and windows is the best prevention against burglary.

Now that school is out and many after school sports are finished, we have a lot of bored juveniles. Not all of them will turn to crime of course, but some may. We need to get low cost programs running in the high crime areas and encouraging the kids to do something more structured than just hanging out together.
I feel for those who were burgled, but since this type of crime is opportunist, locking doors and windows before you go out is always something that makes sense.
