Original post made on Nov 24, 2007

The salt-marsh harvest mouse won't be the only thing scurrying around the Palo Alto Baylands next year. Tots will be, too.

Meanwhile, the Baylands Design Guidelines promote the use of muted colors such as gray. The architects were probably following these guidelines when they selected the color. Of course, the ARB wants "whimsy" and fun, not guidelines.

Only hikers, Google parents and kids will even see this building as it not easily seen from the street. Meanwhile, the Ciardella Garden Supply project gets simple "staff-level" ARB review even though it is visible to millions as they pass it on Highway 101 and San Antonio. Where's Bob Moss when you need him?

I walk in the Baylands regularly, and I appreciate GOOGLE being considerate of their surroundings and mush prefer the subdued exterior they are suggesting in that location. Trust members of the Architectural Review Board to come back with stupid ideas about bright colors on the exterior of the building - how inappropriate at that location.

I'm sure GOOGLE is designing the interior with lots of bright colors for the children but must it say: "I'm a Day Care Center" on the outside?

I think it would be a lot safer for the young children of GOOGLE employees if this building blends in with the buildings that surround it. I don't think GOOGLE wants to advertise it as a "Day Care Center". There are important security implications to be considered.
