Did you attend the Live in Peace march and rally?

Original post made by Michael Levin, South of Midtown, on Feb 4, 2007

There seemed to be a lot of people who came from Palo Alto and other neighboring communities to attend the event in East Palo Alto on Saturday.

If you are a resident of one of the communities neighboring East Palo Alto - or from anywhere else in the Bay Area - it would be very valuable to hear your Town Square posting about your thoughts on the event, what it was like for you, and what degree of significance you think the event held.

Thank you,

Note: I can't make the correction now but of course I'd also like to hear comments from East Palo Alto residents. Sorry about that. I was just inerested to see how the experience for residents and non-residents was similar or different. So if possible indicate your city of residence. Thanks. Micahel

Due to a fractured patella, I couldn't attend the peace march, but was thrilled to see that the message went beyond the usual "stop the violence". From the press reports it seemed people are searching for ways to help community members - from our youth through adults, from community leaders to the folks on the street - learn other ways to deal with frustration and anger that is expressed through violence.

A great opportunity is available to those who want to explore another way. The California Alternatives to Violence Program is holding a Basic Training Workshop at the Friends Meeting House in Palo Alto the weekend of March 16-19. More information is available at www.avpcalifornia.org. The registration fee is low and scholarships are available.

I agree that the way to make a difference is to develop a program that continues month after month and year after year. The more people who learn different techniques and carry it back to their families, friends and community the greater the chance that change will be long-lasting.
