Due to a fractured patella, I couldn't attend the peace march, but was thrilled to see that the message went beyond the usual "stop the violence". From the press reports it seemed people are searching for ways to help community members - from our youth through adults, from community leaders to the folks on the street - learn other ways to deal with frustration and anger that is expressed through violence.

A great opportunity is available to those who want to explore another way. The California Alternatives to Violence Program is holding a Basic Training Workshop at the Friends Meeting House in Palo Alto the weekend of March 16-19. More information is available at www.avpcalifornia.org. The registration fee is low and scholarships are available.

I agree that the way to make a difference is to develop a program that continues month after month and year after year. The more people who learn different techniques and carry it back to their families, friends and community the greater the chance that change will be long-lasting.
