Stanford freshman volleyball player Alix Klineman has been named the Pacific-10 Player of the Week after helping the nationally No. 2-ranked Cardinal to three victories last week.

All three triumphs came over ranked opponents in the Diet Coke Classic, which Stanford won. Klineman averaged 4.80 kills per game.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Klineman immediately rose to the top and made the difference for the Cardinal. Behind Klineman’s consistent offense, the team swept through the competitive tournament in Minnesota, taking down three opponents in less than 72 hours.

Against No. 12 San Diego, Klineman led Stanford to a three-game sweep with 16 kills and a career- high .414 hitting percentage. The next afternoon, she posted her first career double-double, with 17 kills and 14 digs in the team’s four-game win over No. 9 Minnesota. In the tournament championship game against No. 23 Ohio, Klineman pounded down a game-high 15 kills to lead Stanford to a sweep of the undefeated Bobcats and improve to 4-0 on the year.

Klineman, a native of Manhattan Beach, hit .301 for the weekend and led the Cardinal with 48 kills in 10 games. She was one of three Stanford players named to the All-Tournament Team.

The honor is the first of Klineman’s career, as the newcomer nabbed the first Player of the Week award of the 2007 season, and the 59th overall for Stanford.

The Cardinal opens the home season on Thursday, hosting Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m. as part of the Stanford Invitational. The team continues action Friday and Saturday night against Cal Poly and BYU, both at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.

Hast year, Stanford was 14-1 at home and lost just six games in 15 matches.

Stanford volleyball summer campers will be admitted free with a coupon and will sit in special seating in the South End Zone. Saturday night’s game against BYU is Free Poster and Autograph Night.
