A round-up of Palo Alto government action this week

City Council (March 11)

Plastic bags: The council passed an ordinance banning plastic bags at local retail and food-service establishments and imposing a 10-cent charge on paper bags. Yes: Burt, Holman, Price, Scharff, Schmid No: Berman Absent: Klein, Kniss, Shepherd

Board of Education (March 12)

Budget: The board approved an interim financial report, including the addition of $2.6 million in allocations toward principals' discretionary funds, new staffing at the school and district levels and technology support. Yes: Unanimous

Paly construction: The board discussed "conceptual designs" for a new, donor-funded indoor athletic facility at Palo Alto High School as well as an addition to the Paly science building, with a final vote expected March 19. Action: None

Special services: The board discussed a new policy for identifying and educating children with disabilities under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, with a final vote expected March 19. Action: None

Planning and Transportation Commission (March 13)

Comprehensive Plan: The commission heard an update on staff's progress to amend the city's Comprehensive Plan. Action: None
