Brand new library in Menlo Park celebrates Chinese traditions and community

Little Bookworm Library is the brainchild of Atherton mom LuLu Roberts

by Sheryl Nonnenberg

On any given Saturday this summer at the Little Bookworm Library in Menlo Park, children can be found making kites, color ink paintings, rice paper and an array of other crafts during Chinese Culture Summer Camp. In another area of the library, there are children and parents learning how to make Chinese desserts and other dishes in the Little Chef Cooking Class. And at Chinese Story Time, preschoolers are enthralled by specially curated books written in Mandarin.

It’s a shame they don’t seem to be paying any attention to the Cantonese speaking community.

There is another library Books and Me Chinese children's library that is located in Los Alto and we used to visit all he time when we lived in that neighborhood. They have been around since early 2000. Adding another Chinese library in our community is great! As to the Cantonese language programs and resources, you might be surprised to know that Stanford University has a Cantonese Language program. Here is their website : Web Link They do list that Books and Me Library offers Cantonese classes for young children.

Concurring...the Cantonese community has been in America for several generations and unlike the recent surge of wealthy Mandarin expatriots, the Cantonese Chinese are firmly embedded into American society having initially worked in menial labor and serving proudly in the U.S. armed forces.

Books and Me Children's Chinese Library that Sean mentioned above has been offering Cantonese class for young children for many years. They also have some books in traditional Chinese characters but with pinying. I believe those are tailored to Hong Kong based Cantonese speakers.

Unlike Little Bookworm library, Books and Me Library membership is free and they have tens of thousands of books and media to borrow for free. Their website is http://www.booksandme.org.

They have survived the pandemic and is still running but now tailored to kids older than 3. Some classes like Art are up to high schoolers. Their art and abacus students won many national awards in the past few years and frequently display their artworks in local libraries.

I don’s see the difference between the Cantonese speaking school and the new one except the language. So why is this new library so special? Just wondering..
