A round-up of Palo Alto government action this week

City Council (Sept. 20)

Ventura: The council discussed the various planning alternatives for the North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan and voted to support some of the main elements of Alternative 1, which include retaining the building at 340 Portage Ave., developing about 500 new residences in the planning area and gradually phasing out commercial uses. The council voted 6-1 to favor some of the elements of Alternative 1 and then voted 5-2, with Cormack and Tanaka dissenting, on issues relating to phasing out commercial uses. Yes: Burt, DuBois, Filseth, Kou, Stone, Tanaka No: Cormack

Council Finance Committee (Sept. 21)

Tax: The committee supported further exploration and polling for the proposed business tax and a possible increase to the city's utilities user tax. Yes: Unanimous

Ambulance: The committee recommended approving the proposed parameters of Palo Alto Fire Department's new ambulance insurance program. Yes: Unanimous
