William Schlemmer scored 17 points, one of three to reach double figures, and the Palo Also boys varsity basketball team opened its season with a 62-45 victory over Half Moon Bay in the opening round of the Burlingame Lions Club Tournament at Burlingame High on Tuesday.

Joe Foley scored 24 points and Menlo opened the tournament with a 64-49 victory over Stuart Hall. Sacred Heart Prep lost to Aragon, 61-44.

Schlemmer drained four 3-pointers en route to his game-high total and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to go with five assists and five steals.

Max Dorward scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Bryant Jefferson added 12 points. Spencer Rojahn hit three 3-pointers and netted seven rebounds.

The Vikings play Wednesday at 8 p.m. against SCVAL De Anza Division rival Los Altos (2-3), which beat host Burlingame, 57-52.

Foley poured in 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the Knights while Riley Woodson added 17 and Thomas Brown 11.

Menlo (2-0) took a six-point advantage then pulled away with a 23-point second quarter. The Knights will face Aragon at 6 pm Wednesday.

Eric DeBrine scored 10 points but Sacred Heart Prep lost to Aragon. The Gators (1-3) play Stuart Hall at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burlingame.

Gunn was out-scored, 22-6, in the fourth quarter and lost its Wildcat Shootout game, 49-41, to Westmont. The Titans (0-2) host Design Tech on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

Menlo School followed its Marin Catholic tournament championship with a 56-34 nonleague victory over visiting North Salinas on Tuesday.

Mallory North scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers, as Menlo is off to its best start since opening the 2000-01 season with 11 straight wins. Freshman Coco Layton added 14 points and Avery Lee had 11 points.

The Knights (4-0) host Fremont-Oakland at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Freshman Niki Chen scored 12 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, but Castilleja fell to visiting Mills, 49-26, in a nonleague contest Tuesday.

The Gators (2-3) open The King’s Academy Tournament in Sunnyvale at 5 p.m. against Aragon on Thursday.

Senior Chloe Gong scored 19 points but Gunn fell to host Carlmont, 68-37. Jessalyn Grant-Bier and Amber Fu combined for another 17 points.

The Titans (1-4) host Monte Vista Christian (1-1) on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Boys soccer

Isiah Schoenberger scored the only goal of the game in Palo Alto’s 1-0 nonleague victory over visiting Menlo-Atherton on Tuesday.

The Vikings (3-0) host Alvarez at 3:30 p.m. Thursday as part of the Homestead tournament.

The Bears (0-1) meet Alvarez at 11:30 a.m. at Homestead on Saturday.

Girls soccer

Castilleja opened its season on a positive note, beating visiting KIPP Collegiate at El Camino Park in Palo Alto on Tuesday.

Lauren Ashby, who scored twice in the first 20 minutes, Violet Glickman and Alexa Libbey each scored twice for the Gators, who play at Urban at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Ally Dickson, Mariel Gunadi, Hannah Ashby, Olivia Watson, Amanda Khu also scored. Moorea Mitchell earned the shutout in goal.

Courtney Mathison scored a goal and had an assist in St. Francis’ 5-1 victory over visiting San Benito as part of the Firebird Classic.

The Lancers (2-2) meet Menlo-Atherton (2-1) at Fremont High in the Firebird Classic at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

The Bears, who host Terra Nova in their PAL opener on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., edged host Sacred Heart Prep, 1-0, in nonleague game on Tuesday.

Menlo lost at Salinas, 2-0, Tuesday. The Knights (0-3-1) go to Los Altos for a 3:30 p.m. nonleague Thursday.
