The U.S. men’s national volleyball team continued its tough serving Wednesday, using that part of the game to beat Venezuela, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 in an FIVB World Cup match at Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium in Japan.
The U.S. Men improved to 6-0 and face Iran (2-4) on Thursday. Venezuela fell to 1-6.
The U.S. Men served for 12 aces against 15 serving errors on 74 attempts against Venezuela. Matt Anderson, who won the Most Impressive Player award, and Taylor Sander each had four aces. Aaron Russell and Max Holt each added two.
“Our service game was very good and continues to improve,” U.S. coach John Speraw said. “I still think it can get better. If we can continue to make small improvements (in serving) and improve in other aspects of the game, I think we can continue to have a nice tournament.”
The U.S. attack, led by setter Micah Christenson, was also on point as it finished with 33 kills and a .542 hitting efficiency. Anderson led is attacks with nine. Russell had eight and Sander finished with six.
The U.S. blocking was also tough as David Lee had three while Holt and Sander each finished with two.
Toward the end of the third set, Murphy Troy was brought in for Anderson and David Smith subbed for Holt.
Now the U.S. Men must refocus and prepare for Iran. The two teams went 2-2 against each other during FIVB World League pool play over the summer, with each winning both matches at its home venues.
