A daytime burglar who entered an occupied home on the 3100 block of Cowper Street on Monday, Aug. 14, is unknown and at large, Palo Alto police said in a news release.

A resident in his thirties was home alone on a virtual work call when he heard and ignored a knock at his front door at about 9:40 a.m. A few minutes later, he heard footsteps in his home and saw a man standing in the hallway.

Police believe the suspect had entered via an unlocked rear door. He ran out the front door when the resident called out to him. He did not steal anything, police said.

The resident called the police about 90 minutes later, describing the suspect as a male wearing all black clothing and a black face mask.

Residential burglars tend to knock at the front door before entering so as to check if anyone is home, police said. The department advises residents to lock side yard gates and to talk to unexpected visitors from behind a closed door to show they are home.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident calls the police 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voicemail to 650-383-8984.
