Kristie Ahn, a three-time tennis All-American at Stanford, earned a main draw wild card entry into the US Open on Tuesday night by winning the US Open Wild Card Challenge.
Ahn came through qualifying to reach the quarterfinals of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic WTA Premier event in San Jose last week, a good enough to outpace her challengers. She clinched first place in the Challenge with Francesca Di Lorenzo’s loss to Kiki Bertens in a second-round match at Rogers Cup in Toronto.
The Challenge measures ranking points earned at hard-court tournaments over a five-week period to award a US Open singles main draw wild card to an American man and woman who didn’t otherwise earn direct entry.
Ahn jumped in the rankings to No. 138 from No. 178 following her quarterfinal appearance. She has made one other appearance in the US Open singles main draw, in 2008, as a 16-year old qualifier.
She declined to collect her first-round prize money and went on to star at Stanford, clinching the NCAA championship for the Cardinal in 2013.
Table tennis
Palo Alto High grad Lily Zhang earned a silver medal, with teammate Yue Wu, in the women’s doubles at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Tuesday.
Zhang and Wu fell to a team from Puerto Rico in seven sets, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, in the gold medal match.
Zhang, the reigning U.S. women’s singles champion, also lost in seven sets in the quarterfinals of the singles tournament.
Field hockey
The U.S. dropped a 2-0 decision to Canada in the semifinals of the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru on Tuesday and will play for the bronze.
Sailing
USA’s Hallie Schiffman, an incoming freshman at Stanford, and teammate Ernesto Rodriguez won one of three races in the Two Person Mixed Dinghy bracket. They also placed sixth and second to remain near the top of the standings with four races remaining.
