Stanford commit Brock Jones doubled and came around to score to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday and the Pacific Union Financial Capitalists went on to a 4-2 victory over the Humboldt B-52s at Palo Alto High.

Jones, a left-handed hitter playing left field, was batting second in the Caps’ lineup. He also had a walk and stolen base among his four plate appearances and was awarded the ”money hat ” for his contributions.

“It’s pretty cool, a funny thing,” a smiling Jones said after the game.

He played his prep baseball at Buchanan High in Clovis and received a good amount of recruiting attention.

“I had a lot of offers,” Jones said. “But Stanford … that was the place we came to for football and baseball games. And then the academic side of things are important to me.”

Jones said he has already picked out a major: management, science and engineering.

Lefty Texas commit Peter Hansen started for the Caps (3-0) and pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk and striking out five. Cole Dale went two innings and gave up one run. Devoreaux Harrison pitched the final three innings and got the win.

Former Woodside High standout Joseph King served as the designated hitter and batted seventh. He originally committed to Washington State, but switched to Cal after the staff that recruited him was fired in Pullman.

“This is a great experience,” King said of playing with the Caps. “If you put all these guys on one team it would be one of the better teams in the country. Playing very good baseball with very good players makes you get better.”

Jones doubled with one out in the eighth to spark the winning rally. Steven Zobac, who is also headed to Cal, walked. A wild pitch moved both runners up and Jones scored on another wild pitch. Will Worthington singled home Zobac.

The Caps took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Aaron Roberts and a single from Ethan Cloyd.

The B-52s (7-5) tied it in the seventh.

The teams meet again Tuesday in Palo Alto for a 1 p.m. contest.
