Home front: gardeners' yoga; caring for Japanese maples

GARDENERS' YOGA ... Begin the New Year with yoga for gardeners at Lyngso Garden Materials on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Bring your yoga mat and become more flexible, strong and mobile with easy alignment-based beginner yoga stretches and poses. Instructor Patricia Becker will cover how you can free up lower-back discomfort and how to keep your hips pain free. Lyngso Garden Materials is located at 345 Shoreway Road, San Carlos. GARDENING POSTURE ... Do you stoop over and not bend your knees when plucking weeds from your garden? Gamble Garden will host a "Gardening Posture Demo" on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with Esther Gokhale, dubbed the "Posture Guru of Silicon Valley" by the New York Times. Learn to garden the way your ancestors did using techniques such as "inner corset, hip-hinging, and glide walking." Gokhale studied biochemistry at Harvard and Princeton universities and later acupuncture at the San Francisco School of Oriental Medicine. After experiencing crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, Gokhale began her lifelong crusade to vanquish back pain. She has developed the Gokhale Method, a unique approach to help people restore their natural posture. CARING FOR JAPANESE MAPLES ... Lyngso Garden Materials will teach a clinic for those interested how to grow and care for small Japanese maples on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon. Instructor Arnie Cornez is a pruner and docent at Hakone Japanese Gardens in Saratoga, teaching assistant at Foothill College Horticulture Department, and pruner at Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto. LEARN TO ARRANGE FLOWERS ... If you've always wanted to learn how to arrange flowers, now is your chance. On Saturday, Jan. 20, floral designer Katherine Glazier will hold a class, "Getting Started: Flower Arranging for Everyone," at the Filoli estate in Woodside from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will use a variety of seasonal blooms and learn how to cut, condition, arrange and display flowers. Cost is $125. Members of Filoli will receive a 20 percent discount.. All materials are included in the fee. To register, go to filoli.org.
