Palo Alto boys, Gunn girls win city cross country meet

The only thing at stake Wednesday was bragging rights for cross country royalty in the city of Palo Alto. It was a split decision.

Vikings' Henry Saul and Titans' Joyce Shea led their respective teams to victory in the City Meet at Gunn High.

Saul set a course record for juniors and Palo Alto beat Gunn, 19-40, in the varsity boys race. Shea had time to catch her breath before the second runner came in and the Titans edged Paly, 28-29.

Donald Taggart continues to run stronger for the Vikings, finishing third overall. Paly runners also finished 4-5-6.

"Many battles were won by Paly over Gunn in the last 50 yards," Palo Alto coach Wendy Smith wrote in an e-mail. "That's impressive. We saw a lot of determination and grit as runners fought hard at the finish line. We're looking forward to SCVAL championships."

Shea led the Gunn girls to a 28-29 decision over Palo Alto.

"Julie Meng was our surprise performer of the day having an outstanding run," Smith wrote.

The Palo Alto girls junior varsity swept the top seven spots to earn a 15-50 victory.

The Vikings boys frosh-soph team also won, 25-31.
