Cardinal corner: Bing earns weekly conference award

Stanford field hockey goalie Kelsey Bing earned the America East Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

The sophomore goalkeeper opened up the season last weekend with two career-best 10 save games against two top-14 opponents. Bing stopped 20 of the 23 shots she faced for a conference-best .870 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average.

The honor is the second of Bing's career with her first coming Oct. 27, 2016.

The Cardinal returns home this week for a four-game homestand, starting Friday against Iowa at 4 p.m.

Men's golf

The Bush Cup Foundation, sponsor of the annual Bush Cup, announced Tuesday that the event's third edition of men's golf competition will take place between Stanford and Army West Point at the famed Olympic Club in San Francisco on Sept. 7.

"It is an honor for our team to be invited to compete against the cadet golf team of Army West Point in the third annual Bush Cup," said Conrad Ray, Stanford's Director of Men's Golf. "The Bush Cup Foundation stands for principles that are also important to us at Stanford -- intercollegiate athletics, service to others, and service and pride to our country. The Lake Course at Olympic Club is one of the best in America, and a fitting backdrop for such a unique event. We are really looking forward to this event."

The Bush Cup Foundation was established in 2015 to "promote collegiate sports and inspire athletes to strive for personal excellence as well as service to our country as exemplified by the life of President George H.W. Bush." President Bush was honored by the dedication of the event and stated, "Not only will the tournament bear my name, but more importantly it recognizes service to country ... I am proud to be part of what I am sure will be a hugely successful annual event."

The inaugural Bush Cup was contested at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., between Army West Point and Yale, President Bush's alma mater. Last season, Army West Point faced Northwestern at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.

The Bush Cup Foundation will also be awarding a humanitarian award to the Fisher Family, represented by Kenneth Fisher.

Fisher is the chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that builds and runs "comfort homes," allowing the families of hospitalized active-duty military personnel and veterans to stay near their loved ones at no cost.

Fisher has overseen the construction of 71 Fisher Houses throughout the United States and has expanded operations to Germany and the United Kingdom.
