Stanford sophomore Kat Klass scored three goals, Cardinal senior Jamie Neushul added two goals and three assists ad the USA women's national water polo team defeated Australia, 17-3, on Tuesday for its third straight victory at the World University Games in Taiwan.
Klass and Neushul led an offense that saw every field player score at least once. Incoming Stanford freshman Aria Fischer added two goals and two assists, Cardinal grad Kiley Neushul scored twice and UCLA's Alys Williams netted a pair.
Stanford senior Gabby Stone and Arizona State's Mia Rycraw combined for eight saves in net. Team USA returns to play on Thursday against Italy.
Team USA stormed to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter on two goals from Jamie Neushul along with one each from Jordan Raney and Klass. Australia scored late in the period to make it a 4-1 match going to the second.
It was a similar scene in the second quarter as Team USA did the bulk of the scoring. The Americans ran off five unanswered goals to take a 9-1 lead on a Klass goal with 1:53 to play. Australia again added a late score but the United States had the match in control up 9-2 at the intermission.
Team USA went 2-of-5 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while Australia was 1-of-9 on power plays and missed a penalty shot.
