Events that were originally set to start before 4 p.m. will be moved up an hour (ex. 2 p.m. to 1 p.m.) and events slated to start after 4 p.m. will be moved back an hour (ex. 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.)

Men’s volleyball

Stanford junior outside hitter Jordan Ewert joins the U.S. men’s junior national volleyball team for a second year at the FIVB Under-21 World Championships in Czech Republic, which begins Friday.

Ewert is one of seven players who were with the U.S. when the junior national team won the NORCECA Continental Championships that qualified the Americans for the Worlds.

The United States has never won a medal at the FIVB Men’s Under-21 World Championship. The closest it came was a fourth-place finish in 2011 when current U.S. national team players Micah Christenson and Taylor Sander were on the roster.

The best finish by the U-21 team was 11th in both 2013 and 2015.

“At the youth level, the U.S. stacks up pretty well,” U.S. coach Jay Hosack said. “The under-21 team is a completely different story. This is a group of kids who have played one to two years of college volleyball in respective gyms. In the rest of the world, players are already playing professionally. We have great talent. I think a top eight finish would be a good goal to shoot for. If we can get into the top four, it would be an outstanding finish for USA Volleyball at this level.”

Baseball

Menlo College baseball all-Americans Jason Alexander and Julian Jarrard have signed free agent contracts.

Alexander signed a minor league free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels while Jarrard was picked up by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The ace of Menlo’s staff, Alexander was named an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. The right-hander made 14 starts for the Oaks, totaling a 9-2 overall record. He struck out 84 and walked just 15 in 89.2 innings of work and boasted a team-best 2.71 ERA.

His 115 career strikeouts put him in seventh place all time and his 84 this season are good for third in a single season.

Jarrard, also an honorable mention all-American, the most powerful shortstop in the conference, hit 22 home runs, second in a single-season in program history, drove in 56 runs, drew 13 walks and slugged .723. He also fielded an impressive .974 as the team’s everyday shortstop.
