Menlo College's McCarthy becomes school leader in scoring

Danielle McCarthy scored twice and became Menlo College's all-time scoring leader and the Oaks beat visiting Marymount, 4-1, in a nonconference soccer match Thursday.

McCarthy scored early and late to reach 29 goals in her career at Menlo (3-1-1). She's also the career leader in points. Jelissa Blanco added a goal for the Oaks, who host UC Santa Cruz next Thursday. A late own goal from Marymount made it 4-1.

Menlo, held scoreless in its previous two matches, got on the board early thanks to Brittany Squarcia, who created space in the attacking third and found an open Blanco, who led McCarthy with a perfect ball.

Blanco made it 2-0 miday through the first half, placing a free kick over the outstretched fingertips of the Marymount keeper.

The Menlo defense continued to hold and the offense proved opportunistic in the 81st when Alexis Von Schottenstein worked in the corner and found Blanco in front, who placed a great ball out in front for McCarthy.
