Neushul's five goals leads to American water polo victory

Stanford grad Kiley Neushul scored five goals to lead the United States women's national water polo team to a 12-10 victory over Italy in the Holiday Cup at Corona Del Mar High in Newport Beach on Friday night.

Cardinal grad Melissa Seidemann, senior Maggie Steffens and Cardinal-to-be Makenzie Fischer also scored for the Americans, who improved to 3-1 at the Holiday Cup.

The U.S. (39-6) has a rematch with the Netherlands on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Dutch handed the Americans their only loss of the competition.

Steffens, a two-time FINA Female Athlete of the Year, and Fischer, a two-time Orange County Player of the Year, are both taking the year off to prepare for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Neushul scored three times in the first period as the Americans opened a 5-3 edge and never looked back.

On Thursday, the U.S. men's team dropped a 13-10 decision to reigning Olympic gold medalist Croatia in an exhibition, also at Corona Del Mar.

Stanford grads Alex Bowen, Tony Azevedo and Bret Bonanni combined for six goals while Cardinal senior Drew Holland recorded a pair of saves, splitting time with Merrill Moses.

The Americans (20-20-1) complete the year with another game against Croatia at USC on Sunday.
