Sweat for a cause

Ride & Yoga for Ravenswood benefit welcomes cyclists, yogis

Looking for an outdoor sweat session this weekend? Whether you live to cycle the beautiful back roads of the Peninsula or you fancy a session of outdoor sun salutations, slather on your sunscreen, grab your bike and pull on your yoga pants for the 7th Annual Ride & Yoga for Ravenswood this Sunday, Oct. 11.

Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the Ravenswood Family Health Center located in East Palo Alto, where comprehensive medical, dental and mental health services are offered to low-income families, regardless of their ability to pay.

The morning will start with a light breakfast and gourmet coffee bar before each group embarks on an afternoon of cycling or yoga. Cyclists can choose the path to their own adventure: a 50-mile ride along the coast or a 30-mile ride through Portola Valley. Both route options have been planned by experienced cyclists, and local bike shops Chain Reaction and Red Lantern will be at the starting points to conduct safety checks. Each route will also offer water and snack stations and will be patrolled by a support vehicle.

Yoga lovers of all levels can take in the ambrosial surroundings of Atherton with 75-minute outdoor yoga classes in the gardens of the benefit's annual hosts, the Brody family. Beginning yoga classes are instructed by local certified yoga instructor, Ariana Schwarz. In this class, strong emphasis will be placed on the flow of breath, sun salutations, balancing poses and posture.

Intermediate and advanced yoga instruction will be offered by Brian Aganad, Co-Director of Palo Alto's Avalon Yoga International.

After powering through the afternoon's activities, participants can dine on luxurious crepes for brunch back at the Brody family home.
