Stanford football senior offensive tackle Kyle Murphy was named to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list, it was announced Tuesday. The 6-foot-7, 301-pounder from San Clemente was one of 34 players from around the country to be selected.

The Lombardi Award is given to a down lineman on offense or defense, or a linebacker who sets up no deeper than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Nominated candidates must be All-Americans, all-conference or receive 2015 preseason honors.

Murphy joined Blake Martinez and Joshua Garnett as a candidate for the award. Martinez and Garnett were named to the award’s previously released watch list.

Murphy, a science, technology and society major, already has been picked to the Outland Trophy watch list. He has also been chosen to the Athlon preseason All-America fourth team, the Athlon preseason All-Pac-12 first team, the ESPN.com All-Pac-12 first team, and the Phil Steele preseason All-Pac-12 second team.

As a junior, Murphy started 13 games at right tackle and earned All-Pac-12 second team honors. In 2013, he saw action in 13 games at offensive tackle and in the jumbo package. In 2012, he appeared in 14 games — two as a starter — and followed Joshua Garnett as the first true freshmen to start on the offensive line since 2000.

Murphy, who has switched to left tackle this season with the departure of All-American Andrus Peat to the NFL, was a five-star recruit by Rivals and Scout, and a four-star recruit by ESPN. Rivals named Murphy the third best offensive tackle and 19th-best overall recruit in the nation.

Women’s gymnastics

Stanford women’s gymnastics added Neal Gallant to its staff as an assistant coach for the 2015-16 season, as announced Monday by head coach Kristen Smyth.

Gallant brings 27 years of coaching experience, including 23 in the Bay Area, to The Farm and will make the transition across the Bay from California Gymnastics Academy in Livermore, where he’s coached since 2010.

Gallant has worked with multiple gyms in the Bay Area including Bay Aerials Gymnastics, CalWest Gymnastics and Almaden Valley Gymnastics. He has coached individual event, all-around and team state champions and has helped gymnasts qualify to regional, western and Junior Olympic national championships.
