Amin puts attack in perspective Amin puts attack in perspective (September 21, 2001)

Menlo College football quarterback Zamir Amin, who came to the United States with his parents from Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet invasion in 1979, has released a statement concerning recent national events.

Amin, an NCAA record holder, has thrown for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns in three games this season. Menlo (3-0) plays at Occidental College on Saturday at 7 p.m..

The following is the text of Amin's statement:

"The first thing I wanted to say is that my prayers are with everyone that was affected by the recent tragedy which our country underwent. It is truly a tragic time. Not only for us Americans but also for all humankind. I have no doubt in my mind that tough times are ahead.

"My initial reaction was, 'My God how could this happen?' I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It felt like I was watching clips from movie. I think its safe to say that I was in a state of shock. At this point and time I feel as if I have to put everything behind me. Our main objective as a team is to win a national championship. The only thing that is on my mind right now is my schoolwork and our upcoming game against Occidental.

"My family, coaches, teammates and friends have all been really supportive and understanding. I try to also be there for whoever needs to talk to me. Because as I already stated and can't stress enough we all were affected by what happened last Tuesday.

"My family and I do feel safe out of harm's way. We as Americans should feel safe in our own country. This is not the first time America has had to overcome a national tragedy. We have bounced back before and we will bounce back again. Deep down in my heart I feel as if everything will be okay. The best thing to do now is to go on with life and hope for a brighter future."
