Home Front Home Front (June 08, 2001)

SUMMER TIME . . . and there's finally time to tackle some of those bigger projects, such as learning how to reupholster a chair. "Upholstery: Basic Techniques" will be offered on Tuesdays, June 19 to July 24, or Thursdays, June 21 to July 26, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Palo Alto Adult School. Cost is $75. Class is held in the Wrestling Room at Palo Alto High School. Call (650) 329-3752 to register.

PETS-IN-LESS-NEED? . . . Pet lovers Bill and Arlys Oesterling are selling their Redwood City rental property and planning to give the proceeds to Pets-in-Need, a Redwood City-based animal rescue operation. Title to the $600,000-plus property is in the Oesterling 2001 Charitable Remainder Unitrust. Proceeds from the sale will be invested, and upon the death of the Oesterlings, will go to Pets in Need. According to Bill Oesterling, who is 80, there was no depreciation left on the rental property, and this allows them to spread out the capital-gains tax and make a substantial charitable gift. Arlys Oesterling serves on the Pets in Need board, and the Oesterlings have adopted several pets through the organization.

EXOTIC EDIBLES . . . Katie Wong, a member of California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc., will discuss "Exotic Edibles for the Bay Area" at the Garden Club of Los Altos meeting on June 12 at 1:30 p.m. The group meets in the Creekside Room, Los Altos United Methodist Church. Visitors may attend for a $5 fee.
