What the Health – a New DocumentaryUploaded: Jun 30, 2017
What the Health is a new film by the creators of Cowspiracy (discussed here in a previous posting.) “This film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick”, so says the description on the film’s website. Now that sounds like a pretty loaded statement and I was skeptical, but I watched it anyway. And what I came away with was the realization that while the farm-food-industrial-marketing complex was a pretty hard thing to take on, I could at least do something to try to protect myself and my family from the harmful effects of its machinations. And that is commit to a whole food plant-based diet.
A Plant based diet: such a simple and concise description of what to eat and what not to eat to maintain your health, make your body inhospitable to disease, and fortify yourself to battle disease if it comes (in conjunction with modern methods of medical treatment if necessary.) While becoming a vegan, or even a vegetarian, is still in many circles and parts of the country an alien concept and signals “joy of eating” deprivation to so many people (“I love my beef”), maintaining a whole food plant based diet does not conjure up the same pre-conditioned reactions. After all, except for the extra crap that most farm animals are fed and then pass on to meat/dairy eaters, (antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, saline injections to fatten up chickens, and other “fillers”), they themselves practice a plant-based diet. When people say they don’t eat meat, from many people, including nutrition-education-deprived medical doctors, the immediate reaction is “Where are you going to get enough protein.” This film addresses this question and why getting your protein from animal products (meat, and dairy are both animal products less we forget) is harmful and self-defeating on so many levels.
You can stream both Cowspiracy and What the Health on Netflix (you can sign up for a free trial and see it that way) or visit https://vimeo.com/ondemand/whatthehealth the film’s website to. Have a watch-party at your next BBQ. Imagine what would happen to the cost of and need for health care if everyone adopted a plant based diet? And a quick note on organic foods. If you are going to go for it and adopt a plant based diet, wouldn’t it make sense to pay the extra cost and only buy organic food. Why continue to ingest pesticides and GMO grown foods if your aim is to be healthy. Think of all the money you’ll be saving by not eating meat. Use it to buy organic. While I am not endorsing any food seller, I must say it’s heartening to see that Costco (at least around here – not sure if it’s country-wide) is carrying more and more organic produce. Imagine if they decided to only carry organic produce? Their massive buying power would help narrow the price difference between organic and non-organic produce and cause more farmers to realize how profitable it would be to provide Costco with their organic products, eliminating one of the supposed causes of why organic produce costs more.
