Summer - Get Out There – How Many More You Got Left Anyways?

Uploaded: Jun 21, 2023

Happy Solstice.

The longest day.

Light cracks into the horizon at 3:30 AM.

One of summers gifts to us is a warm and cozy outdoors.

Don’t you love the long days? I feel most alive outside.

The Food Party! just wanted to take a moment to wish you a happy solstice and remind everyone to get outside for a picnic or lunch or a happy hour drink. Go with a friend, or your own sweet self and groove that summer vibe.

Next week, we’ll have ideas of fun spots to do just that.

Until then, here’s an oldy but a goodie (that probably need updating - call beforehand).

^ Where in the peninsula does the sun shine (or crack) at 3:30AM?

Portola Valley. You start seeing the shift to morning from my window. Actually, you make me pause. I've been wondering why we wouldn't shift to day light savings for years, because then the sun WOULD rise at 3:30! So 4:30AM with DLS, thanks for the catch. I set the timer last night to get up at 3:30 and check, and then said - screw that I'll sleep instead!

You have a way with words. As well taking care of yourself.
Thanks for the notice about the "longest daylight and shortest night" for 2023.

"I've been wondering why we wouldn't shift to day light savings for years, because then the sun WOULD rise at 3:30!"

• Totally absurd as the sun would start to set around 3:30 PM.

Outside of northern Alaska and the Arctic Circle, Portola Valley must be the only place on Earth with a 3:30 am sunrise.

Why isn't this phenomena visible in Los Altos Hills? Does it have something to do with the latitude?

An acquaintance once mentioned that she saw The Northern Lights while atop Black Mountain but I suspect this sighting was on account of the mushrooms she had taken earlier.

Seriously? I grew up in Westridge and have never witnessed a 3:30 in the morning sunrise. Had I known of such an occurrence, my circadian rhythms would have been severely altered.

The sun is way too high above the ground to be a 3:30 AM sunrise in Portola Valley and most elsewhere.

Then again, I guess you have to be there and only under the most remarkable of conditions.

Readers - we corrected this above. Light starts to peek out at 4:30am. However, if it wasn't daylight savings, the time would be 3:30am.

Just another 'what if'...at 3:30 am PDST, it is 4:30 am MDST and 5:30 am in Chicago.

The hands of a clock do not determine when the sun comes up.

Your blog about Summer resonates with a profound reminder to embrace the fleeting moments of summer. It is a call to savor the sun, the warmth, and the adventures that this season offers. As we bask in the summer sun, it is an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we can make the most of these precious moments.
