Thank you Kepler's, Books Inc. and Linden Tree!

Before Covid our family greatly enjoyed visiting our local bookstores. Our kids loved browsing the shelves looking for new books to read. I enjoyed seeing our kids’ interests change and their reading improve over the years.

Once Covid hit it was sad to put these family outings on hold. However, we are so thankful that we could attend so many wonderful virtual events hosted by our local bookstores over the past year. Even as more in-person activities open up, we are still very excited to attend a few of their upcoming virtual events this spring.

Earlier this week our kids had a wonderful time listening to Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas talk about their new book. Their Wow in the World Podcast has been one of our go-to activities during the pandemic. And last week I enjoyed listening to Los Altos High School students talk with Julie Lythcott-Haims about her new book and growing up. It was inspiring to hear teenagers being so open about the struggles they faced this year. I enjoyed the discussion so much that I hope to also catch her speak at Kepler's virtual event in April.

I am very thankful that we had the chance to listen to a variety of virtual author and storytime events during the pandemic. Linden Tree’s FaceTime storytimes and Kepler’s post-event recordings gave us a lot of flexibility to enjoy events whenever they fit into our schedule. Our kids could enjoy a virtual storytime at one bookstore at the same time I was attending a virtual author event at another.

These storytimes and virtual author events created great memories for our kids during the pandemic. The adult events gave me an opportunity to feel connected to other adults and to our local community. If you haven’t had a chance to attend these virtual events yet, I would recommend checking out our local bookstores’ virtual events coming up this spring.
Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

As parents to the Covid Generation of children, I applaud you as life during the past year must have been full of challenges that have never happened before even during times of War, Depression and similar difficulties.

Books and times of seeing unmasked faces face to face are ways of allowing children to develop normal social interactions at the right times.

I would love to hear how you are achieving the normal things, face to face facial expressions, peer time interaction, fear of strangers, who is a stranger and who isn't a stranger, and how to be polite and respectful to adults you come into contact with while with your children.

It must be hard and lonely for you as parents. It takes a village to raise a child, but in the last year the village has been hidden. Your children are our future. We need to get our childrens' lives back to them.

Bystander - Thanks for commenting and asking lots of important questions about child development during Covid. I’ll work on addressing them in more detail in an upcoming post. It would be great to hear how other local parents dealt with these issues.

Overall playgrounds have been great places to socialize this year. We’ve had so many positive interactions with both strangers and close friends. With fewer cars on the road, it is easier to work on street safety. And while it is not the same as interacting with friends, I believe our kids have learned a lot by frequently playing with their siblings this year.

Is Clark Kepler still involved with the store?
