Thanks Steve... Great to process this question on a lazy Sunday afternoon. What is important for my quality of life? Health of course... and living in this geographical area where medical assistance is at hand.... Warm and thoughtful, caring friends and colleagues. Oh.. and the feeling (a feeling of having SOME control), that I can survive financially in Palo Alto in my older age, the community I have spent so much time and where I have "built" community. Loving family, both far and near, and living in a culture that encourages me to define what I mean by words such as "family", i.e not just blood ties but also other ties. that's a plus. Living in a diverse community with people from all walks of life (old young, lower income and upper income, many of whom come from different cultures, as do I and my family). Very important for my quality of life is that people enjoy thinking critically and talking about ideas, about meaning in life and how to improve the community that we have and how to not fear the future AND fan tolerate differing points of you. Allowing others to voice their opinions and not allowing them to say "love it or leave it", which is what I heard too much of since coming to the US... is a real plus. And, health and the comfort of knowing I live in a beautiful place with forgiving weather... California! Now that's for starters..... I do feel extremely privileged and lucky so far. "Rich" is having good quality of life, no? Happy father's day to you and all the many "fathers" out there....
