Update: Police report that the man was safely detained at about 6:20 p.m.
The Mountain View Police Department’s Hostage Negotiating Team is attempting to diffuse a tense situation unfolding this afternoon in a residential area on Williams Way, where a man with a gun is being uncooperative with law enforcement officials.
The situation began at about 12:51 p.m. Wednesday, when a neighbor of the unnamed 46-year-old called authorities to request a welfare check for the man, who reportedly lives in an apartment on the 1000 block of Williams Way.
When police arrived at the apartment building, they discovered that the man was with his 13-year-old daughter and that he was armed with a handgun, according to Shino Tanaka, the police department’s public information officer. At that point, officers pulled back and called for assistance. The 13-year-old girl is now safe with authorities, but the man remains uncooperative.
Several streets surrounding the residence are cordoned off, and police said at 4:30 p.m. that residents of the area will not be permitted to enter the perimeter to come home. Police have blocked off three intersections — Dale Avenue and Greenview Drive, Dale Avenue and Williams Way, and Greenview Drive and Crestview Drive — effectively limiting access to the L-shaped Williams Way.
Up to six nearby residents have been evacuated from the area and other neighbors have been told to shelter in place while emergency responders work to resolve the situation.
A number of local emergency agencies are on the scene, including Mountain View police and fire officials, members of the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department and a SWAT team.
