NCAA SOCCER . . . The handshakes and pleasantries probably waited until after Tuesday afternoon's NCAA men's soccer second- round match between Santa Clara and host California. The seventh-seeded Bears (13-3-2) finished second in the Pac-10 to UCLA but earned a first-round bye. Gunn High grad Andrew Jacobsen and Menlo-Atherton High grad Javier Hil may have been secretly cheering for Santa Clara (13-6-2), which beat visiting Ohio State, 1-0, on Saturday night to reach the next round. The Broncos feature Gunn grads Mehdi Ballouchy and Matt Marquess among their starting lineup. Ballouchy was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year last week, and learned over the weekend that he is among the 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in intercollegiate soccer. Ballouchy, was selected by a panel of NCAA Division I coaches for the award, took two shots, including one on goal in the Cal victory. Marquess, a defender, helped to keep the Buckeyes out of the net. The Bears lead the all-time series with Santa Clara, 25-11-4. Jacobson is second on the team with 13 points. He has four goals and five assists. Hil, who started nine matches and appeared in 16, has one goal and one assist. Yale dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to visiting Stony Brook. The Bulldogs (14-4-5), shared the Ivy League title with Dartmouth and Brown featuring a lineup that included freshman and Gunn grad Alex Guzinski, who made the assist on Yale's only goal, crossing a pass top Gage Hills, who headed the ball into the net.
