ON THE BEACH . . . Stanford graduate Kerri Walsh and playing partner Misty May Treanor defeated Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs, 21-23, 22-20, 15-11, in front of a standing-room only crowd at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open on Saturday. The finals featured a rematch of last weekend's Huntington Beach Open where second-seed Wacholder and Youngs swept May-Treanor and Walsh. May-Treanor and Walsh's victory was their fifth in seven championship matches this season against Wacholder and Youngs and was the 43rd title for the 2004 Olympic gold medalists. May-Treanor and Walsh secured their second plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier honoring their two Manhattan Beach Open Championships. Defending AVP Manhattan Beach Open Champions, Karch Kiraly and Stanford graduate Mike Lambert fell to fourth-seeded Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt in an elimination match Sunday.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The Palo Alto Oaks semipro baseball team will host the annual Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 10 at Moffett Field Golf Course in honor of their legendary former coach. The tournament begins with a 2 p.m. shotgun start and costs $125 per person, including greens fees, a cart, prizes and a Tri-tip dinner. The Oaks will be offering a car with a hole-in-one on a selected par-three . . . The Menlo Park Strikers FC girls' 10-under soccer team is looking for experienced players for the upcoming fall season. For more information, contact Chris at 1-408-497-3816 . . . Registration is open for City of Palo Alto's Fall Adult Sports Leagues in basketball, softball and volleyball. Leagues are accepting complete teams, and individuals can be placed on a free agent list. Palo Alto is also looking for coaches for the middle school athletics program. The Stanford Water Polo Club is accepting registrations for the fall session which runs between Sept. 6 and Oct. 30 and is designed for boys aged 14 and under. While there is no minimum age or skills requirement, athletes are expected to be able to swim 100 yards within two minutes. Deadline is Aug. 31. Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area. Details and registration information can be found at www.eteamz.com/palo_alto_babe_ruth. Cost is $135 for the season, which runs from Labor Day through October. All registration will be on-line.


COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is looking for girls' varsity and JV soccer coaches for the 2005-06 winter season.
